Grace Fellowship Triumphs in Finals over Main Street UMC
Grace Fellowship won a low-scoring contest, 6-4, over Main Street UMC in the Championship game. The runs were all scored early with Main Street UMC scoring the final run of the contest in the top half of the fourth. inning. In earlier action on Saturday, Grace Fellowship won 16-11 over First Baptist Amherst while Main Street UMC clobbered Hooksett Nazarene 42-19 in a game that took 2 hours to complete. Saturday's consolation game was forfeited when First Baptist Amherst wasn't able to field a team. On Friday night, Grace Fellowship squeaked out an 11-10 victory over Central Congo in the 9th inning. After a dominating performance (31 runs in 4 innings) over Community Chapel Red last week, Southside Bible fell to First Baptist Amherst 19-15. Hooksett Nazarene duplicated that score with a 19-15 win over Community Chapel Blue. Finally, in a tightly contested game, Main Street UMC defeated Calvary Bible 15-13. Complete playoff brackets can be seen under Playoff Schedule. |

Team Specific Schedules Updated With Results
As part of the ongoing web site enhancement initiative, the team specific schedules have been updated to include game results and comments. Nashua and Derry schedules now also have scores in the displayed tip on mouse hovers. Previous enhancements have included church logo and link updates, html-formatted Nashua and Derry schedules (which included matchup displays on mouse hovers), main page formatting changes and last date/time update included on main page. Future changes will include removing the now obsolete Scores By Team and enhancing the Playoff Bracket creation (which is currently a tedious, manual process for every result entered).
Using White, 0.43 Core Balls
The ASA softball standard has changed to a .40 core, optic (i.e. light green) softball. The .43 core softballs may continue to be used through the end of August, 2009, but manufacturing of these balls was stopped last year. We wanted a .43 core, optic ball but the only .43 core balls were white so we decided to go with those. Next year we will be using a .40 core, optic softball.
"Coaches' Discretion" pitch count Bylaw approved
On a 10-8 vote, new Bylaw 3j was approved. This Bylaw states: The pitch count shall start at 0 balls and 0 strikes unless both coaches and the umpire agree to a starting pitch count of 1 ball and 1 strike at the beginning of the game or the beginning of an inning. ASA Rule 7 Section 3B does not apply to our League. The alternative Bylaw would have retained the 0 balls and 0 strikes count without allowing for this to change during the game. Note that a technical correction was made to the Bylaw after the vote; the actual ASA rule being amended was Rule 7 Section 3B, not Rule 8 Section 3B which was incorrectly referenced in the original proposal. Also, Bylaw 3I regarding stealing has been updated with a similar technical correction. The update Bylaw now references "ASA Rule 8 Sections 4F:3 and 4F:4" instead of the previous "ASA Rule 8 Sec. 4G: G". |
Home Run Rule Bylaw Added
The Bylaws have been updated with new Bylaw 3k which explicitly affirms that the Church League home run rule applies to our League. This update was prompted by a lack of documentation to share with an umpire who was unaware of our rules. The Bylaw is: The limit of over-the-fence home runs for Church leagues (ASA Rule 5 Section 8A3) does apply. As of 2009, this limit was 4 over-the-fence home runs in a game.
Playoff changed to single elimination
The coaches met on Thursday, March 5th, and voted to change the playoffs to be single elimination with a consolation game. The format will continue to have 16 teams reducing to 4 teams over two Friday nights. The Saturday games will start at 9:30 a.m. with the winners advancing to a Championship game and the losers playing a consolation game.
Format of Schedules Updated
The format of both the Derry and Nashua schedules have been updated. No schedule changes have been made; the schedules are still dated 4/28. The new format includes links to the team schedules from the team names, links to directions from the field names, provides rollover capability for team matchups and has a dynamic table that expands or shrinks to fill the space available in the browser. These schedules can be printed by selecting the area to be printed and then choosing to print the "selection" instead of the default "all" which would include the page header.
Bylaw change: up to 16 players in lineup
An updated Bylaw will go into effect this year: teams will be allowed to have up to 16 players in the lineup which is increased from the previous 13 players. As in the past, any 10 of the players in the lineup are allowed to play defense. Note also that if a player can not bat (e.g. because of injury) and there is no substitute available, an automatic out will be recorded. This has always been the ASA rule but would be more likely to come into play if a coach chooses to put all of his players into the lineup at the start of the game. |
