Thanks and Overview
Many thanks to those who take the time and significant effort to coach in our League. The coach plays a vital role in organizing a team from the men at the church, getting all the materials in to the League office in a timely manner, hauling equipment to and from games, developing a line-up including substitutions, relaying important rules and other expectations to the team, teaching softball as needed and creating an atmosphere of Christian fellowship both within the team and with other teams. As you can see, this is a tall order! Here are the specifics of what a coach typically needs to do in order to successfully run a team.

Coach Responsibilities to the League

League Pre-Season Responsibilities
  • Attend or send a representative to the pre-season League meeting
  • Pay money due on time to the Treasurer
  • Send in the roster by the date required. Nashua rosters should include whether the player lives, works or worships in Nashua. It is recommended that the Pastor sign the final roster submitted to the League.
  • Review the proposed schedules for any flaws in the scheduling
  • Get insurance binder to the President on-time
  • Supply contact information for yourself and someone else (typically the assistant coach). E-mail addresses are very important since e-mail is the primary form of communication. Secondary communication is via the web-site, phone conversations, in-person conversations and, occasionally, snail mail.
  • Generally assist with League issues as help is needed (e.g. contact towns for suitable fields for use by the Derry Division)
  • Receive and help distribute balls, field permits, scorebooks, ASA rule books and other miscellaneous material prior to or at the first game
  • Request and coordinate pre-season field slots with the President
  • Get signed roster waivers (for 16 and 17 year olds) to the President before allowing a minor to play

  • League Regular Season and Playoff Responsibilities
  • Attend or send a representative to the pre-playoff League meeting
  • Formally notify (e-mail preferred) President of any roster changes
  • Report any field or lighting issues to the President
  • Report any significant softball incidents involving players or umpires that require either League action or umpire training to the League President
  • Insure that fields are cleaned-up and raked (when required) before leaving the field
  • Insure that your team has enough players to play each scheduled game. If there are not enough players, contact the other team and the League President at least several days in advance (preferably a week in advance) so that the game can be canceled, rescheduled or forfeited.
  • E-mail results with scores to the President after each game played. Include in this e-mail any questions or special circumstances that arose during the game that the League should be aware of.
  • Know the League policies and bylaws

  • General League Responsibilities
  • Vote as requested on any issues that come up either in meetings or e-mail discussions (For, Against, Abstain)
  • Serve as a League Officer as needed (currently have a President and a Vice-President. The President serves as Treasurer)
  • Read and respond (if needed) to e-mails
  • Pray for the men on your team and throughout the League that they would be drawn closer to Christ and that you can be a part of that through softball.

  • Team Responsibilities

  • Organize the team by advertising the team within the church and recruiting members as needed.
  • Create roster of all men. It is recommended that the Pastor sign the final roster submitted to the League.
  • Welcome and encourage new players to join regardless of ability
  • Reach out to men not associated with the church to play as an outreach ministry.
  • Collect money (as needed) from players
  • Encourage use of website (http://www.nhchurchsoftball.org) by individuals which will help inform and educate players about the rules and expectations of the League.
  • Be present or have someone else present to be in charge of the team during games
  • Bring the team equipment (or designate someone else to do this) to the game including the game-condition (i.e. never used) softball
  • Know the Points of Emphasis and discuss them with your team so that we can avoid injuries and unnecessary debates while enjoying the game of softball.
  • Communicate general information from the League level to the individual team members as needed
  • Insure that all men who desire to play, are on the roster and are at the game get into the game as required by Bylaw 3c.
  • Create a game roster and submit it to the other team before the start of the game.
  • Go over the ground rules with the umpire before the game
  • Make any coaching decisions as needed over the course of the game
  • Create a spirit of Christ-centeredness on the team
  • Contact team members if game is canceled, re-scheduled or forfeited for any reason.

  • Field permit (required)
  • League Bylaws (strongly recommended)
  • Official ASA Rules (recommended)
  • Copy of team roster (recommended)
  • ASA approved bat list (recommended; look under "bats")
  • Key for lights (if playing at a lighted field)
